Michael Cohen pleads guilty to 8 federal crimes

President Donald Trump’s former longtime lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to eight federal charges on Tuesday, including campaign finance violations related to hush money payments he made to porn actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election.

What’s more, Cohen admitted that he did so at the direction of Donald Trump, and with the goal of influencing the election.

Cohen pleaded guilty to a total of eight counts, including five counts of tax evasion involving nearly $4 million, one count of making a false statement to a financial institution, one count of willful cause of unlawful corporate contribution from June 2016 to October 2016, and one excessive campaign contribution on October 27, 2016.

The last charge — one excessive campaign contribution — is related to a $130,000 hush money payment Cohen arranged to Stormy Daniels to keep her silent about an affair she says she had with Trump in 2006. Cohen wired the $130,000 to Daniels’s lawyers on October 27, 2016.

Cohen has been in deep legal trouble since April 9 — when the FBI raided his residence, office, and a hotel where he was staying and seized several of his electronic devices.

And though Cohen’s conduct has been examined in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference with the 2016 election, this indictment is separate from the Mueller investigation.

Several months ago, federal investigators in New York convened a grand jury to investigate Cohen for “criminal conduct that largely centers on his personal business dealings” and “finances,” as they put it in a court filing. They also secretly obtained search warrants on several of his email accounts.

This led to the high-profile April 9 raids. At that point, prosecutors were looking for information on Cohen’s hush money payment of $130,000 to Daniels on Trump’s behalf, hush money payments to other women, efforts to suppress negative information about Trump during the 2016 campaign, and information about taxi medallions Cohen owns.

ow Cohen appears to have reached a deal with prosecutors. It’s not quite clear what this might mean for President Trump, now that the man who’s been one of his closest associates for decades may be facing serious legal consequences.

Cohen, who once said he’d take a bullet for Trump, seems to have soured on his old boss as the months wore on. He gave several public signals that he might be willing to cooperate with prosecutors, including releasing a secret recording of himself and Trump discussing a payoff to former Playboy model Karen McDougal. A CNN report also suggested Cohen was considering telling Mueller that Trump had advance knowledge of the 2016 Trump Tower meeting where Russians offered “dirt” on Hillary Clinton — something the president has repeatedly denied.

Cohen’s plea agreement doesn’t call for cooperation with prosecutors, including those on Mueller’s team. But Cohen’s revelations in court certainly deal a blow to the president, and Trump is clearly listed as “Individual 1” in the charging documents.

“There is no allegation of any wrongdoing against the president in the government’s charges against Mr. Cohen,” Rudy Guiliani, Trump’s attorney, told the New York Times.

But it’s not good news either. Cohen is the latest member of Trump’s inner circle charged with federal crimes, and Cohen’s plea came just as a jury returned a partial guilty verdict in the trial of Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Trump Upset Government Shutdown Stopped Him From Attending Party

On January 19, after not reaching the required votes, the government shutdown all three branches of government under the rulership of the same party. This was the first time that this has happened in modern U.S. political history.

While the shutdown caused mayhem and fury across the nation, one person that allegedly angrier than anyone was Donald Trump and it wasn’t because the government shut down, it was because the shutdown reportedly caused him to miss a party.

The Daily Beast reports that sources close to the president said he became angered by the shutdown because it affected a trip that a trip that he had planned for his inauguration anniversary in Mar-a-Largo at a black-tie gala event. The sources told the Daily Beast that as the vote became close to close, Trump concerns grew because he had scheduled the event for Saturday night and if the government were to shut down it would stop him from going to “my party.”

Scott Dworkin, who is the Democratic Coalition co-founder took to Twitter to confirm that he also received similar reports about the Trumps concerns. Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “Multiple people close to the White House told me this morning that Trump is furious he hasn’t been able to leave for Mar-a-Lago yet. Now they are trying to figure out a way for him to get to Florida without much backlash. I don’t think that route exists. #TrumpShutdown.”

The further the speculation about the canceled trip, the White House was able to confirm that Trump’s trip to Mar-a-Lago was canceled over the shutdown. The Daily Beast was able to reach some of the Representatives who disagreed with the statements saying the closure, “would not necessarily impede the president’s travel plans to Mar-a-Lago or elsewhere.” Another official at the White House Told CNN that it made sense to scrap the trip as it would not be a good look for POTUS.

Teacher Suspended After Pulling Off Student’s Hijab

A teacher at the New Vision Academy Charter School in Nashville, Tennessee, was suspended Wednesday after two videos circulating on social media of someone removing a girl’s hijab was traced back to the educator.

In the first video, which is captioned “pretty hair,” the student wearing the hijab is shown hiding her face as someone removed the religious head scarf and exposed her hair to the classroom. Multiple students are seen playing with the girl’s hair as she tries to readjust the covering. Someone told her “her hair was too pretty to be covered.” A second video was posted with the caption, “lol all that hair covered up.”

A concerned viewer sent the videos to News 4. Both of the clips were reportedly posted on the teacher’s Snapchat account. When contacted by the media, the principal, Dr. Tim Malone began investigating immediately.

The teacher initially denied recording the video and said touching the hijab was not done out of disrespect. The girl’s mother and sister were very upset after they watched the video, saying, “This should never happen.”

In a statement to the news station Wednesday, Malone wrote that the teacher was suspended without pay:

“New Vision Academy is a diverse school. As a school community, we pride ourselves on embracing and celebrating our racial, ethnic, religious and economic diversity. Our students learn and grow, best when they learn from one another. To foster this environment, all students must feel respected and supported.

The actions depicted in the Snapchat video do not reflect the values, culture or climate of New Vision Academy. New Vision Academy will continue to emphasize that all staff members act in a way meant to empower and inspire our students. New Vision will use this video as an opportunity to press forward with increasing cultural sensitivity and awareness among all members of the New Vision community. The staff member in question has been suspended, without pay, and we have had direct discussions with the students depicted in the Snapchat. New Vision Academy apologizes for this unfortunate incident, and will be better in the future.”

JAY-Z Provided Fat Joe with a Plane for Puerto Rico

Since government aid to Puerto Rico is moving at a snail’s pace, it looks like it’s up to the community to lend a helping hand. The U.S. commonwealth is reeling in the wake of Hurricane Maria. For a week, residents there have been struggling without electricity, food, gas, and water.

Fat Joe is teaming up with JAY-Z, Tidal, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. to send supplies to Puerto Rico. In a video posted on social media, the Puerto Rican rapper says he will be collecting supplies like batteries, women’s products, water, toothpaste, soap and canned food.

This will be taking place on Saturday, September 30th at the Jacob Javits Center in midtown, Manhattan. JAY-Z is supplying the airplane that the Bronx native will fly into Puerto Rico. There, he will meet Reggaeton star Daddy Yankee to distribute the items. Fat Joe’s goal is to collect 200,000 lbs. of goods.

There are several locations throughout the state and New York City that will also be accepting donations on Saturday. They include the Shirley A. Chisholm State Office Building in Brooklyn and the Jamaica Street Armory in Queens. There are also two locations in the Bronx accepting goods, Roberto Clemente State Park and the Department of Motor Vehicles on Fordham Road.

For those who cannot get to those locations but would like to make a monetary donation, you can do so at tidal.com/PuertoRico.

Melania Trump threatens lawsuit over English class billboard

Billboards featuring Melania Trump and the slogan “just imagine how far you can go with a little bit of English” were removed Tuesday from the Croatian capital after her lawyer threatened a lawsuit.

The billboards were part of a marketing campaign by a private English language school in Zagreb, which tried to persuade Croats to learn English by reminding them of the Slovenian-born U.S. first lady’s personal experience.

But Mrs. Trump did not accept what was apparently meant to be a joke about her English, spoken with a heavy accent. Her Slovenian lawyer demanded that the billboards, showing Melania Trump delivering a speech standing before a fluttering American flag, be immediately removed.

“I’m satisfied with the fact that the school admitted that they violated the law and that they are ready to remove the billboards and (Facebook) ads,” lawyer Natasa Pirc-Musar told The Associated Press. “We are still analyzing possible further legal steps.”

Melania Trump has hired the law firm to protect her image, which has appeared on various products in her native Slovenia, including cakes, underwear and tourism advertisements.

Pirc-Musar said that the Croatian school has apologized for the billboards, but that the statement also needs to be published by the Croatian and Slovenian state news agencies.

“We are very sorry that the billboards were misunderstood as something intended to mock the U.S. first lady,” Ivis Buric, a spokeswoman for the school, American Institute, said. “It was meant to be something positive, to show her as a role model.”

Buric admitted that the short advertising campaign turned out to be “very successful” because of the wide publicity it received both locally and internationally. She said that the school intends to put up new billboards, this time without Melania Trump’s image.

Melania Trump was born in neighboring Slovenia as Melanija Knavs. She left Slovenia in her 20s to pursue an international modeling career before meeting Donald Trump at a Fashion Week party in New York in 1998.

Bill Maher: ‘White supremacists are the federal government’

From California’s “defiance” of the federal government on climate change to local authorities refusing “to cooperate with Trump’s deportation squad,” Bill Maher declared “the white supremacists are the federal government” and liberals are the new “rebels” of states’ rights.

The Real Time host said on his Friday night show that “the script has completely flipped from 50 years ago,” pointing to Alabama Governor George Wallace, who proclaimed in a 1963 speech, “Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.” He “physically blocked the door of the University of Alabama to prevent black kids from enrolling” and used states’ rights as justification for his cause, Maher noted.

“But that was then,” the HBO personality continued. “Now the white supremacists are the federal government and it’s liberal states that are under siege from federal overreach. We’re trying to defend our way of life here and what we believe in. We believe in sanctuary cities and pollution controls and legalized pot and gun control and ObamaCare and a woman’s right to choose — and we’re going to defend ‘em.”

Switching to a Southern accent, he shouted, “We the rebels now! We are the rebels now and now we get to talk like this!”

Maher compared Mississippi’s defiance of Attorney General Bobby Kennedy’s call for desegregation in the 1960s to states now fighting against Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who, among other controversial moves, is attacking affirmative action. Conservatives, he says, “can’t get mad because we’re just following in a long and hallowed conservative tradition called states’ rights. It’s just that now we’re the state that wants to be left alone.”

President Trump Won’t Be Invited To Celebrity-Studded Hurricane Harvey Telethon

Houston rapper Bun B and Scooter Braun are busy planning the September 12, 2017, celebrity-studded Hurricane Harvey telethon, but President Trump may not get an invite. As devastating flooding has engulfed Texas and the full damage is still too early to assess, people nationwide are standing in solidarity to help their fellow citizens.

The Hurricane Harvey telethon will not be a place to promote political agendas or spread bigotry and hatred. According to Bun B, unless President Trump can find his place alongside other presidents, such as Barack Obama in a show of strength and unity, he won’t be invited to appear.

There will be three simulcasted telethons across the nation including one in Nashville, Tennessee, New York, New York, and Los Angeles, California. Reese Witherspoon and Blake Shelton will host the Nashville telethon, tentatively Michael Strahan and Kelly Rowland will host the New York telethon (this is subject to change) and Jaimie Foxx and Hillary Duff are tentatively scheduled to host the Los Angeles telethon. Organizers are interested in celebrities who were born and/or raised in Houston to participate in the telethon.

Bun B is outspoken about the treatment of blacks in a country that is seemingly on the verge of a race war. With white supremacists rearing its head again, Bun B is one of the most outspoken and vocal rappers on issues of race and division in the nation.

He has repeatedly called upon white Americans to stand up against racism, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he would withhold an invitation to President Trump unless he proudly stands alongside Barack Obama and other presidents.

The news that Bun B will not invite President Trump unless he stands in unity with other presidents is getting a mixed reaction on social media. Some feel that Bun B shouldn’t single out President Trump, while others wholeheartedly agree.
