Cruz had a breakout season in 2011, where he caught 82 passes for 1,536 yards, and greatly contributed to the Giants’ Super Bowl XLVI win over the New England Patriots. Known for his trademark “salsa dance”, Cruz suffered a devastating injury in 2014 and has struggled to regain his Pro-Bowl level play, culminating in 39 catches for 586 and only one touchdown this season.

Devin McCourty & Martellus Bennett To Skip White House Visit

New England Patriots star Devin McCourty became the second Super Bowl champion to declare that he will not be joining his team for a trip to meet President Donald Trump at the White House, on Monday, February 6.

Leading up to Sunday’s big game in Houston it had been anticipated that Martellus Bennett would boycott the tradition, with he and his Seattle Seahawks star brother, Michael, being two of the more politically vocal voices in the NFL. Bennett had hinted that he wouldn’t be attending during Super Bowl opening night festivities last week, and reconfirmed his position following the Patriots’ historic comeback win, stating, “It is what it is, people know how I feel about it.”

In a text message sent to Time magazine, McCourty followed suit with his tight end teammate, writing, “I’m not going to the White House … Basic reason for me is I don’t feel accepted in the White House. With the president having so many strong opinions and prejudices I believe certain people might feel accepted there while others won’t.”

It remains to be seen how Bennett and McCourty’s refusal to head to the nation’s capital might impact their standing on the team, as Patriots owner Robert Kraft, head coach Bill Belichick, and QB Tom Brady are all avid supporters of the President. Should any kind of repercussions be levied against them, the team may face a backlash from Black players around the league, considering the team brought itself to meet President Obama without its team captain in 2015, when Brady omitted himself from the White House visit.

Michael Vick Officially Retires From the NFL

After 13 active NFL seasons, which exclude his infamous two years suspended from the game and incarcerated for his involvement in a dog fighting ring, Michael Vick has declared himself officially retired from pro football.

Michael Vick Officially Retires From the NFL

Vick’s exit from the game, which comes following a year on hiatus, was formally announced by ESPN’s Josina Anderson on Friday, February 3. Fans will recall Vick looking to make a splash in the league again when he got an opportunity to start in Ben Roethlisberger‘s place when the Steelers quarterback went down mid-2015. But his opportunity was short lived, as he himself got injured a couple of games into his fill-in role. What many fans may not know is that up until the beginning of the current season, Vick still felt the calling to return for one last comeback, but it was not meant to be.

The timing of Vick’s departure is uncanny considering it comes days before the team that drafted him and supported his rise through his first six seasons in the NFL competes for a chance to win it all in the Super Bowl. Vick never did bring his Atlanta Falcons to the big game. But his highlight reel ability no doubt drew the attention of fans from around the country and teams around the league on a weekly basis. Vick was a Pro Bowler for half of the seasons in which he played in the Georgia Dome.

Vick’s return to football after his absence during the 2007 and 2008 seasons proved that for as long as youth was on his side, his ability could help him adapt to shine among the best in the game. In 2010 he made a full return, starting 12 games and leading the Philadelphia Eagles to the playoffs on the strength of his 21 passing touchdowns and nine rushing TD’s, in what would be one of his finest seasons. It can be argued that his skills didn’t necessarily decline, as he continued to show flashes of brilliance over the next several seasons, but his production certainly slowed down, until he was gone from the Eagles and relegated to a backup role on the Jets in 2014, before making his final stop in Pittsburgh.

With 6,109 rushing yards to his name, he goes down as the most successful rushing quarterback of all-time, and a pioneer who would entice future teams who’ve sought to build around a dual-threat passer/runner.

According to NFL.com, the 29-year-old former tow truck driver and semi-pro football player was also convicted of attempted manslaughter for wounding Smith’s wife, Racquel Smith and will be sentenced in February. In a statement, Racquel’s attorney said, “Because of the upcoming sentencing hearing, in which Racquel will provide a victim impact statement, she does not feel it is appropriate to comment on the facts of the case at this time.” Her attorney continued, “The main focus of Will Smith’s family is to see Mr. Hayes justly sentenced for the murder he so callously committed.”

Russell Simmons Offers Brandon Marshall Endorsement Deal

NFL linebacker Brandon Marshall has found a supporter who can offer him more than his sympathies, following reports that a second Marshall sponsor has pulled its endorsement in response to his recent protest of the National Anthem.

Music mogul Russell Simmons took to Instagram upon learning the news on Tuesday [September 13], and extended Marshall an opportunity to recoup some of his lost bucks while he continues to stand for what he believes in.

“Which other company is supporting Brandon? It says two endorsements,” Simmons asked followers, before jumping the gun on a possible partnership. “RUSHCARD is in. We will find Brandon and make him an offer and make him a deal.”

Marshall is one of the players who has followed Colin Kaepernick‘s lead in bringing a call for the nation to address racial injustice, to the NFL in 2016. In fact, while Kaepernick sparked the movement back in August, Marshall was the first to abstain from observing the anthem during the regular season, rallying various players around the league to continue joining after he took a knee during the star-spangled banner before the year’s inaugural game against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.

Within 24 hours of staging his dissent, Marshall’s partnership with Air Academy Federal Credit Union was severed. On Monday came news of another voided endorsement, when CenturyLink announced it’s parting from Marshall. Interestingly enough, CenturyLink is the sponsor of CenturyLink Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks themselves have had an overt presence among the league’s protesters, demonstrating with interlocked arms during pre-game ceremonies on Sunday. There has been no word as to whether CenturyLink plans on punishing the Seattle team, but the company’s maneuver could none the less spell out inhibition among players who are planning to protest, as it’s reached over the sport includes a partnership with DirecTV.
