Artist Blasted for Racist Depiction of Serena Williams at U.S. Open

Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper came under fire for artist Mark Knight’s cartoon depiction of Serena Williams’ incident at the U.S. Open, which many see as racist.

The photo went viral online, with celebrities like Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling blasting the photo on Twitter, writing, “Well done on reducing one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes and turning a second great sportswoman into a faceless prop.”

Jemele Hill also added that the photo is “About as subtle as Fran Drescher’s voice.”

Herald editor Damon Johnston backed Knight’s cartoon in a statement, which read, “A champion tennis player had a mega tantrum on the world stage, and Mark’s cartoon depicted that. It had nothing to do with gender or race.”

Knight also reacted himself, stating, “I drew this cartoon Sunday night after seeing the US Open final, and seeing the world’s best tennis player have a tantrum and thought that was interesting,” he said. It’s been picked up by social media in the US and my phone has just melted down. The world has just gone crazy.”

How Princess Charlotte, 2, just made royal history

Move over, #RoyalBaby. Princess Charlotte, not even 3, has just made history.

Although her mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to a son Monday morning, Charlotte’s order in the line of succession to the British throne won’t change based on her gender.

This makes Charlotte the first princess who won’t be overtaken in the line by a younger brother.

It’s all thanks to the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013, which changed tradition to state that the gender of a royal born after October 28, 2011 does not give that person, or their descendants, precedence over anyone else in determining the next monarch.

Before this legislation was passed, older sisters were passed by their baby brothers in the order of succession. This would have dropped Princess Charlotte, 2, behind both her siblings: Prince George, 4, and the as-yet-unnamed baby.

The Succession to the Crown Act was announced in 2013 but didn’t take effect until 2015, making Monday’s newborn the first member of the immediate royal family to be affected by its changes.

Prince Charles is the current heir to the British throne, which has been occupied by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, since 1952. Prince William is second, followed by Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and the new baby boy.

What about Prince Harry, you ask? He has now been demoted to sixth in line.

Kate Middleton gave birth to the newest member of the royal family about 11 a.m. local time at St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, west London. The boy is Queen Elizabeth II’s sixth great-grandchild. He weighs 8 lbs 7oz (3.8 kilograms), and both mother and baby are “doing well,” according to the Palace.

Black Panther Becomes Highest Rated Movie Ever on ‘Rotten Tomatoes’

Following a four-day stretch that saw the film accrue the fifth highest-grossing opening in box office history, Black Panther has made its mark as a critical success by swiftly surpassing The Wizard Of Oz as the number one movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to the popular movie review site’s ‘Adjusted Score’ ranking formula, the red-hot Marvel Studios production has already amassed a quantitative/qualitative mix of reviews that boosts it above such old school and contemporary classics as Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Get Out and Moonlight.

While a number of the titles listed on the Rotten Tomatoes’ 100 movies of all time list actually rate higher than the 97% that Black Panther is sitting at, they do not combine the number of reviews and the percentage of positive reviews among them to rank above the Ryan Coogler film.

The acclaim that Black Panther has been receiving comes amidst countless headlines reporting on the ridiculous $242 million domestic and $427 million international draw that it scored over the weekend. With the insurmountable success that the production has delivered many are now predicting the impact, it will have on society and what it will mean for Black actors and directors in the industry going forward.

The Weeknd says goodbye to H&M over ‘monkey’ sweatshirt ad

Pop star The Weeknd has cut ties with the international retail chain H&M after the company ran an ad featuring a black boy modeling a sweatshirt emblazoned with the words “coolest monkey in the jungle.”

The Canadian singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, had partnered with the Sweden-based company for its 2017 Spring Icons Collection and modeled some of its apparel.

On Monday, The Weeknd tweeted that he was “shocked and embarrassed” and “deeply offended” and “will not be working with @hm anymore…” along with a photo of the ad.

By 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, it had been retweeted close to 103,000 times and “liked” almost 230,000 times.

“We completely understand and agree with his reaction to the image. We are deeply sorry that the picture was taken and we also regret the actual print,” H&M said in a statement. “We will continue the discussion with The Weeknd and his team separately.”

Other celebrities have also gone after H&M online. NBA star LeBron James posted singer Chris Classic’s edited version of the ad on Instagram. It features a gold crown on the model’s head and a drawing of a crown covering the “coolest monkey in the jungle” line on the hoodie. The phrase “king of the world” run across the top of the photo.

H&M was accused on social media of being racist after using the photo online to sell a hoodie in the U.K. The retailer removed the image and the sweatshirt is no longer for sale anywhere.

The company pledged to “look into our internal routines to avoid such situations in the future.”

Sen. Roy Blunt (Rep. MO) said, “I think everybody needs that investigation to happen,” adding, “And the Senate Intelligence Committee, again that I serve on, has been given the principal responsibility to look into this, and I think we should look into it exhaustively so that at the end of this process, nobody wonders whether there was a stone left unturned, and shouldn’t reach conclusions before you have the information that you need to have to make those conclusions.”

Senator Blunt also spoke on the importance of the trustworthiness of the national security advisor, after reports surfaced of Flynn speaking about sanctions against Russia before Trump was sworn in. Blunt explained, “In this case, absolute trustworthiness is the most important thing, even better than, even more important than knowledge, you’ve got to trust what the national security adviser says and apparently that wasn’t gonna be the case here.”
