Former Congresswoman Gets 5 Years for Pocketing Bogus Charity Money

Former Florida Democratic congresswoman, Corrine Brown, has been sentenced to five years in prison for mail, wire and tax fraud involving a sham charity, according to Fox News. Brown was pocketing hundreds of thousands of dollars from donors that thought their money was going to a charity. But in reality, the charity was a sham.

Brown, along with her chief of staff, Elias “Ronnie” Simmons, solicited donations for One Door for Education and informed the donors that the money would be funding scholarships for minority students. Brown & Simmons raised more than $800,000 but only $1,200 was awarded as scholarships. The money that was pocketed was spent on lavish events if it didn’t go straight into the congresswoman’s bank account.

A federal judge sentenced Brown on 18 crimes that ranged from conspiracy to fraud.

“It is a sad day for everyone. It is a sad day for this community,” Judge Timothy Corrigan said in court, according to The Associated Press. “I was impressed with all the outpouring of support for you and it’s a tribute to you and the work you’ve done … and that makes it more tragic and sad.”

After being elected to the house in 1992, Brown served 12 terms. She became one of the first three African-American lawmakers from Florida to be elected to Congress. Brown was indicted last year on 24-counts and lost last year’s election because of it.

Brown has blamed Simmons for all the wrongdoings. Though Judge Corrigan didn’t believe the explanation, he did lessen Brown’s sentence. Brown’s lawyer vowed to appeal.

Richard Spencer Bounced a $10K Check for Florida Event

Alt-right White supremacist Richard Spencer’s controversial appearance at the University of Florida, Gainesville in October almost never happened, and the reason had nothing to do with students’ attempts to shut the event down. Rather, it appears that Spencer’s think tank organization bounced a check on the university only days before he was scheduled to show up.

On Wednesday, November 8, the UF released several hundred pages of emails that documented record of the failed transaction. A copy of the check reads, “We would like to confirm with you that the check (#1014) with the amount of $10,564.00 paid by the National Policy Institute on 10/10/2017 was returned due to “Insufficient Funds” in payer’s bank account on 10/12/2017.” Apparently, the check and rental contract for use of the university’s space was FedExed by NPI executive director Evan McLaren via same-day delivery on October 6. Six days later the school was alerted about the blunder.

The National Policy Institute has seen its share of unsuspected woes so far as finances go in 2017. Back in March, the organization learned that its non-profit tax-exempt status was being stripped by the IRS, for failure to file required tax returns since 2012. While the NPI’s current financial standing has gone unreported on, it is confirmed that they indeed eventually came through with their payment for Spencer’s University of Florida speech.

OJ Simpson Moving to Las Vegas After Florida A.G. Said He’s Not Welcome

Now that O.J. Simpson has been freed from prison he will be going about the task of putting his life back together, but he will not have free rein to do so just yet. While good behavior may cut the time significantly, Simpson is subject to five years of supervised release, and it has already been established that he must remain in Nevada for the foreseeable future. But all indicators point to The Juice being Florida bound in due time, which is a prospect that the state’s attorney general is not happy about.

“I’ve handled parole hearings my entire time as a prosecutor and … I have never seen such lack of remorse in my entire career,” AG Pam Bondi said during an interview on Fox and Friends early Sunday, October 1. “Other than his complete lack of remorse, he wants to come to Florida and golf all over our state, and I don’t want that to happen.”

While Simpson thus far has only been granted approval to reside outside of Las Vegas, he will have the opportunity to request relocation at some point down the line. at which point it is believed that he will hook up with good friend and Naples, FL resident Tom Scotto, who picked Simpson up from Lovelock Correctional Center in the wee hours of Sunday morning. A move to the sunshine state would not only deliver him back to a community of friends he has there but will reconnect him with his children. Bondi admits that if a judge indeed were to permit Simpson to head to Florida, they’d have to receive him. But she ensures that there will be conditions placed upon him, that make for a less than pleasant survival for him.

“You’re not gonna report into parole officers by mail, O.J. Simpson,” Bondi told the New York Post. “You’re gonna have travel restrictions, you’re gonna get alcohol tested, you’re not gonna be able to drink in our state.”

Serena Williams Gives Birth To Baby Girl

A baby just in time for Labor Day weekend.

Serena Williams and fiancé Alexis Ohanian welcomed a baby girl at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday, according to multiple reports.

WPBF-25 news producer Chris Shepherd was first to report that Williams gave birth to her daughter, weighing 6 pounds, 13 ounces, writing that mom and baby are “doing well.”

Beyoncé later confirmed the news, congratulating her friend on the newest addition to the family.

Williams reportedly checked in two days prior, clearing out an entire floor of the hospital for security purposes before going into delivery. This is the first child for both the tennis champion and the Reddit co-founder.

Williams first announced she was 20 weeks pregnant in April with a Snapchat photo of herself in a swimsuit. She later revealed, however, that the photo was shared by accident due to pressing the wrong button. Given the timeline, her followers quickly deduced that Williams was expecting when she won the Australian Open in January like a total legend

Before giving birth, the 35-year-old said she had a “strong suspicion” that she was having a girl, while Ohanian thought a baby boy was on the way.

“Two weeks after we found out, I played the Australian Open,” Williams explained to Vogue. “I told Alexis it has to be a girl because there I was playing in 100-degree weather, and that baby never gave me any trouble. Ride or die. Women are tough that way.”

Williams and Ohanian have been linked together as early as 2015, but kept their relationship private. The two first met by chance in Rome near the hotel buffet and Williams gave him her number. After a magical rendezvous in Paris weeks later, they began a relationship.

Florida Cops Pull Over Black Female State Attorney For Garbage Reasons

Aramis Ayala, Florida‘s first Black female state attorney, was pulled over by a pair of police officers last month in Orlando. The now-viral body camera clip of the cops trying to shake down one of the most powerful women in the state for garbage reasons has been making the rounds with many calling a flag on the play.

Ayala, who resides in Orlando, was driving on June 19 when the two white officers pulled her over and surrounded both sides of her vehicle. In the exchange, Ayala is agreeable and doesn’t offer conflict, even when one of the officers ask why does she have a state attorney sign on her license.

The plot thickened when Ayala inquired what the stop was over, to which the officer fumbled that her windows were too dark although he’s heard admitting he had no accurate way of measuring it. Further, they said that running her tags pulled up no information on the vehicle, another likely story.

Many on social media reacted to clip, saying that this was a classic case of “Driving While Black” and we can imagine those two cops are jockeying a desk and making coffee rounds for the whole precinct after this incredible gaffe. Let’s not pretend that Ayala is a bit of a thorn in the side to Republican Gov. Rick Scott due to her refusal to seek the death penalty in trying criminal cases, which has those Blue Lives Matters dillweeds hot on her trail.
