Heyer’s Mom “not talking” to Trump

Mother of Charlottesville victim Heather Heyer revealed on Friday morning she is “not talking” to President Trump after he criticized “two sides” for the violent protests that broke out in Virginia last Saturday.

Thirty-two-year-old Heyer was killed last Saturday when a car plowed into a group of counterprotesters opposing the “Unite the Right” rally. Heyer’s mother, Susan Bro, strayed from directly speaking to Trump’s rhetoric in response to Saturday’s events during her memorial service on Wednesday, but did not hold back during a Friday morning appearance on “Good Morning America.”

“I’m not talking to the President now,” Bro said on Friday. “I’m sorry. After what he said about my child, and it’s not that I saw somebody else’s tweets about him. I saw an actual clip of him at a press conference equating the protesters like Ms. (Heather) Heyer with the KKK and the white supremacists.”

Trump tweeted about Heyer on the day of her memorial service, referring to her as a “truly special young woman.”

“Memorial service today for beautiful and incredible Heather Heyer, a truly special young woman,” Trump tweeted. “She will be long remembered by all!”

Trump opened himself up to criticism when he repeated his “both sides” response to Charlottesville during a Tuesday press conference — a statement that was met with rebuke from Democrats and Republicans alike. While he tweeted about Heyer on Wednesday, the president was criticized for not directly calling the family — but Bro revealed there has been attempted and successful engagement between her and the White House.

“At first I just missed his calls. The call — the first call looked like actually came during the funeral. I didn’t even see that message,” Bro said. “There were three more frantic messages from press secretaries throughout the day and I didn’t know why that would have been on Wednesday, and I was home recovering from the exhaustion of the funeral and, so I thought well, I’ll get to him later and then I had more meetings to establish her foundation, so I hadn’t really watched the news until last night.”

James Alex Fields Jr. of Ohio has been charged with second-degree murder in the case of Heyer’s death.

Baltimore Takes Down Confederate Statues Overnight

Four monuments tied to the Confederacy and American slavery were taken down in Baltimore very early Wednesday morning after the City Council voted for their immediate removal on Monday. From CNN:

By early Wednesday, video posted on social media showed cranes slowly lowering some of the monuments from their perches. Mayor Catherine Pugh told WBAL that some of the monuments will be sent to Confederate cemeteries.

The removals come as cities and states are considering taking down Confederate monuments following the clashes at Saturday’s rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which left one anti-racism protester dead.

According to Baltimore’s WBAL, the four monuments removed were a statue of Supreme Court Justice Roger Taney, who wrote the majority opinion in Dred Scott; a monument to Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson; a monument to Confederate soldiers and sailors; and a Confederate women’s monument.

The New York Times reports that small crowds were present to celebrate the removals and that Black Lives Matter was spray painted on the pedestal of the Lee-Jackson monument.

Heather Heyer Memorial Service Held in Charlottesville

Five days after she was tragically killed while demonstrating against a white supremacist rally, a memorial service is being held for 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

The service started at 11 a.m. Eastern. Prior to the service, President Donald Trump tweeted his well wishes for Heyer and her family, saying she was a “beautiful and incredible” woman that “will be long remembered by all.”

Heyer was killed Saturday when a vehicle allegedly driven by James Alex Fields Jr. stormed into a counter protest and hit dozens of demonstrators. Nineteen others were injured as a result, and Fields was arrested and charged by police.

The incident has caused widespread outrage across the nation as people look for answers to the senseless act, which was spurred by increased tensions because of the white nationalists gathering in the Virginia city. Those demonstrators were there protesting the potential removal of a Confederate statue in a local park.

Heyer’s mother, Susan Bro, told NBC News that her daughter was at the demonstration with friends and was hit by the car as she was trying to cross the street.

“She was plowed down by a young man who was intent on spreading hate and thought hate would fix the world,” Bro told the news outlet. “And hate does not fix the world.”

Bro spoke to the Huffington Post one day after her daughter’s death. She told the news outlet that Heyer was at the counter protest to try and “bring an end to injustice.” She tearfully added that her daughter’s goal was always to stop hatred in the world.

“Heather was not about hate, Heather was about stopping Hatred,” she said to the outlet. “Heather was about bringing an end to injustice. I don’t want her death to be a focus for more hatred, I want her death to be a rallying cry for justice and equality and fairness and compassion.”

Bro also appeared on CNN with Anderson Cooper and tearfully remembered her daughter.

Merck CEO resigns from Trump council over Charlottesville

Merck & Co Inc Chief Executive Kenneth Frazier resigned from U.S. President Donald Trump’s American Manufacturing Council on Monday, saying he was taking a stand against intolerance and extremism.

Frazier, who is African-American, is the only CEO so far to leave one of Trump’s advisory councils because of his reaction to the violence in Virginia. Prominent Democrats and Republicans criticized Trump’s response to the violence over the weekend.

A gathering of hundreds of white nationalists in Virginia took a deadly turn on Saturday when a car plowed into a group of counter-protesters and killed at least one person.

Trump had said “many sides” were involved, drawing fire from across the political spectrum for not specifically denouncing the far right.

“America’s leaders must honor our fundamental views by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy, which run counter to the American ideal that all people are created equal,” Frazier said in a statement announcing his resignation.

“As CEO of Merck and as a matter of personal conscience, I feel a responsibility to take a stand against intolerance and extremism,” he said.

Trump responded in a tweet, saying now that “Ken Frazier of Merck Pharma has resigned from President’s Manufacturing Council, he will have more time to LOWER RIPOFF DRUG PRICES!”

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, which represents the pharmaceutical industry and lobbies on its behalf in Congress, declined to offer a statement of support for Frazier or to comment on Trump’s reaction.

RHONY’s Luann D’Agostino Ends 7-Month Marriage

It’s over for Luann D’Agostino and husband Tom. The Real Housewives of New York City star announced Thursday via her Twitter account that she and her husband of seven months are calling it quits.

“It’s with great sadness that Tom & I agreed to divorce,” wrote the former Countess. “We care for each other very much, hope you respect our privacy during this sad time!”

A close friend tells PEOPLE it was Luann who officially moved to dissolve the marriage.

“She is sad,” says the source, “but she was the one who made the decision to file.”

The source reveals that Luann is going on vacation and “finding comfort” with her grown children, Victoria and Noel.

Adds the source of Luann and Tom: “They had lots of issues and really tried to make it work, but it was just obvious they weren’t on the same page.”

Luann’s RHONY cast mate Ramona Singer, who had previously gone on dates with Tom and who made no secret of predicting the relationship would be short-lived, was among the first to respond to the news, replying to the original tweet: “I am so sad for you.”

The couple’s Dec. 31 wedding was the main event of a lavish, three-day wedding weekend in Palm Beach, Florida, attended by several friends of the bride from various Housewives franchises.

Luann, 52, was previously married to Count Alexandre de Lesseps. Tom, 50, had not previously been married.

Beset by doubts about their relationship throughout their whirlwind courtship, the pair weathered divorce rumors in mid-July, with a source telling PEOPLE the couple had hit a “major rough patch.”

“Tom and I are in love, and marriage takes work,” Luann told PEOPLE at the time. “We are working on this together.”

One insider told PEOPLE in July that many of the couple’s issues stemmed from “trust issues” related to lifelong bachelor Tom’s previous infidelity and flirtatious personality that had been causing friction well before the wedding.

“There have been a lot of problems,” acknowledged the source. “She felt he was using her for her fame and he went from Ramona to Sonja to her. He’s a Housewife groupie.”

Luann herself told PEOPLE just days after word of newlywed troubles surfaced: “What couple doesn’t argue? Tom and I have a very passionate love affair going and that’s why we got married.”

Trump accidentally Revealed His Summer Vacation Plans

It looks like President Donald Trump will be headed out on vacation and away from the White House, yet again.

The FAA released a notice that restricts flights over Bedminster, NJ from August 4-21 due to “VIP movement.”

Axios noted that this is likely because Trump will be vacationing at his Trump National Golf Club in the town. Trump recently indicated he much prefers the golf club to the White House, which he reportedly called a “real dump.”

The FAA notice said aircraft within a certain “inner core” around Bedminster are prohibited except for “Approved law enforcement, military aircraft directly supporting the United States Secret Service (USSS) and the office of the President of the United States, approved air ambulance flights, and regularly scheduled commercial passenger and all-cargo carriers operating under one of the following TSA-Approved standard security programs/procedures.”

Axios also noted that Trump frequently complained about the length of his predecessor President Barack Obama’s vacations. August is a slow time for government officials and if the FAA notice is an indicator, Trump will be gone on vacation for as long as Obama was last year when he visited Martha’s Vineyard, Axios said.

Trump himself took to Twitter numerous times during Obama’s presidency to make his point.

Trump also complained about Obama spending time golfing or campaigning, though Trump has been golfing at least 43 times since he was inaugurated and has also held several campaign rallies for his 2020 reelection bid (though he has only been president for a little more than six months).
